quick fit tip #3: eat (or drink) post-workout protein!

💥Happy Monday Fit Fam!!💥

Welcome to a new week!! I hope your weekend was restful so you're able to conquer this week!👊🏽

I'm here today with a quick fit tip to help you all on your fitness journeys. I've been getting a lot of questions about the nutrition needed to gain muscle. I'll talk a bit more in depth about that in a future post (in the meantime, see a post here about calories), but for now I'll be touching on one of the most important aspects of nutrition:

post workout protein!

If your goal is to gain muscle, or even to tone up in any way, consuming protein within ~30 minutes following your workout is extremely important, especially if you are a female. Amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins, are essential to building muscle. Following a workout (especially one that involves lifting heavy or against any type of resistance), your muscles have been broken down and need to be repaired in order to grow. Since the body utilizes proteins to rebuild the muscles, a large source of protein (ie. from your diet) is necessary for the repair process, which begins immediately following (and even a bit during) your workout.

It is recommended that you consume at least 20 grams of protein within 30 minutes of your workout. This can be in the form of physical food (meats, dairy, peanut butter) or in the form of a protein shake! I personally really enjoy protein shakes (protein powder + unsweetened almond milk) because they are quick, easy, and taste delicious! (Check out a post about my favorite protein powder here). Protein shakes (specifically those made with whey protein) are also beneficial because they absorb much faster than physical food, thus allowing your body to utilize the proteins in the muscle repair process more quickly! Fast absorption = GAINZ!!!

Okay, I'm trying to keep this post short since it is just a "quick fit tip," but please let me know if you have any questions about post-workout protein consumption! This was a broad overview and I will be writing a more in-depth post about overall nutrition.

I hope you all have a wonderful week! Follow along with my workouts on my Instagram page here!
